Facilitating intangible Viking culture in VR

An immersive experience in Virtual Reality to facilitate intangible culture of the Viking age to children at Trelleborg Museum.

Children take part of a funeral ceremony held at Trelleborg fortress in the year 981, in the presence of none other than the first king of Denmark, Harald Bluetooth. A Christian monk and pagan Volva take part of the procession providing insight to how the two beliefs have co-existed.

As flashbacks, players got to fight with swords and the classic round Viking shield, and with bow and arrow to practice their aim.

The VR experience was developed for Trelleborg Museum as a student project.

A game with a purpose

The purpose of the game is to facilitate the culture at Trelleborg in the Viking age. 37 children participated in the evaluation of the game and it was proven that the game was an effective tool to teach children about how two religions were worshipped at once, and that the fortress was a military establishment.

In total, four prototypes were developed and three evaluations were conducted to achieve a final design.
